Late Shang Xisima: social ranks differed, but genes did not.
Researchers sequenced 11 individuals from the late Shang Dynasty Xisima cemetery, a site with clear burial signs of social stratification. Despite differences in grave goods and burial treatment, the genome-wide data show no genetic differentiation between social groups. This suggests that in this community, social status was not tied to ancestry or family lineage.
Of the 11 individuals, 8 had resolvable Y-chromosome lineages: N-F963, O-Z26258, N-CTS582, O-Z8362, Q-F1626, C-F10036, C-FGC45548, and D-FT241207—each found once. Mitochondrial DNA included D4b2b (2 individuals), D5a2a1, M10a1a1b1, M8a3a, D4a1e1, and F1a1c2. This high diversity suggests a community with varied maternal and paternal origins, not a single elite lineage.
For ancestry enthusiasts, this shows that social hierarchy in late Shang times did not necessarily follow genetic lines. Status could be achieved or assigned within a genetically diverse community, reminding us that ancient societies were more complex than simple elite-family models.
