Ancient DNA reveals Botai horse herders and early steppe expansions into Asia.
This study sequenced 74 ancient genomes from Inner Asia and Anatolia to test whether Early Bronze Age Yamnaya expansions spread Indo-European languages and horse husbandry. It shows the Botai people, linked to early horse domestication, were distinct from Yamnaya herders. The genetic data helps clarify how steppe populations moved and mixed with Asian groups, reshaping ancestry across the region.
The site includes 91 ancient samples, with 81 Y-chromosome lineages resolved. Cultures span Cis-Baikal EBA, Cis-Baikal EN Shamanka_EN, Cis-Baikal LN UstIda_LN, and Turan_CA. Top Y haplogroups are Q-FT375375 (7), Q-Y2668 (3), N-L666 (3), N-F3290 (3), and Q-YP761 (3). Top mtDNA lineages are D4j, C4a2a1, and G2a1 (4 each).
For ancestry fans, this shows Inner Asian steppe populations were not a single block. Y lineages like Q and N and mtDNA like D4j and C4a1a3 reflect deep local and steppe connections, useful for tracing Central Asian and Siberian roots.
