Ancient DNA reveals the Y-chromosome and ancestry of Hungary's Hunyadi family.
Researchers sequenced whole genomes of two Hunyadi descendants: Johannes Corvinus and his son Christophorus. They confirmed their father-son link and found both carry Y-haplogroup E1b1b1a1b1a6a1c, common in Eurasia. Their mitochondrial lineages differ: Johannes has T2b, Christophorus has the rarer T2c1+146. Overall, their genomes show ancient European ancestry, not recent exotic origins.
Two ancient individuals from the Hunyadi family were analyzed. Both were male and resolved to Y-haplogroup E-COR1 (E1b1b1a1b1a6a1c). Their mtDNA differed: one T2b, one T2c1-T146C!. This small sample confirms the direct male line and maternal diversity.
For ancestry enthusiasts, this shows the Hunyadi line carried a Eurasian Y-haplogroup and ancient European autosomal DNA. It helps identify other family members and challenges assumptions about their origins.
