Ancient DNA reveals Papua New Guinea's genetic history was reshaped by back-migrations, not just the first settlers.
This study analyzed over 250 genomes from Wallacea and West Papua to reconstruct population history. It found that most Papuan-related ancestry in Wallacea (about 75-100%) came from prehistoric migrations out of New Guinea, not from the original settlers who arrived 50,000 years ago. Mixing between Papuan and local Wallacean groups was limited to the western and central parts of the archipelago and likely coincided with the arrival of Austronesian sailors, whose genes now make up 40-85% of modern Wallacean ancestry.
The site includes 22 samples with 19 resolved Y-chromosome lineages. The Y-chromosome diversity is dominated by haplogroup C (C-Z31885, C-M38, C-M208), along with M-B256, S-Z41398, and some O lineages (O-F706, O-B451). Mitochondrial DNA is overwhelmingly B4a1a1 and its subclades (B4a1a1a, B4a1a1e, B4a1a1a5), with one P1 sample. This pattern reflects strong Papuan and Austronesian genetic signals, consistent with the paper's findings of complex mixing in the region.
For ancestry enthusiasts, this shows that Papuan ancestry in Wallacea is not simply from the first settlers but largely from later back-migrations from New Guinea. The strong Austronesian mtDNA and Y-chromosome markers highlight how recent dispersals reshaped the genetic landscape of the region.
