Il DNA dei Piast rivela origini non locali e legami con l'Europa nord-occidentale.
I Piast, fondatori del regno di Polonia nel X secolo, sono stati studiati con analisi di DNA antico su 33 resti scheletrici da otto siti. Dieci individui sono stati confermati come Piast. Il loro aplotipo Y (R1b-BY3549) è oggi raro e compare in tre antichi individui del Nord-Ovest europeo (Francia, Paesi Bassi, Inghilterra). Questo suggerisce che i Piast non fossero di origine locale e che la formazione dello stato nell'Europa centro-orientale medievale coinvolse anche élite straniere.
Il sito riporta 30 campioni, con 27 aplogruppi Y risolti. Le linee Y più frequenti sono R-P312, R-P310, R-YP6048, R-Y22809, R-L51 e R-L20 (2 ciascuna), poi R-Y78850 e R-L23 (1 ciascuna). Per il mtDNA solo 3 campioni hanno dato un risultato, tutti 'N/A'. Questi dati mostrano una diversità maschile con prevalenza del macro-aplogruppo R1b, coerente con l'aplogruppo specifico dei Piast.
Per chi segue la genealogia genetica, questo studio mostra come il DNA antico possa collegare dinastie storiche a regioni lontane. Se cercate radici Piast o R1b-BY3549, sappiate che è un lignaggio raro ma con possibili connessioni nell'Europa nord-occidentale.
