Ancient DNA from 30 individuals reveals a sharp genetic shift in southwestern England around 3000–2500 BCE.
Researchers sequenced genomes from 30 individuals buried at 12 sites in southwestern England, all dated between about 4000 and 1300 BCE. They found a clear genetic turnover between 3000 and 2500 BCE. This means that people living in the region before that period were genetically quite different from those who came after. The shift likely reflects a major migration or population replacement, a pattern seen elsewhere in Britain and Europe at that time.
Of the 30 individuals, 19 had enough DNA to resolve their Y-chromosome haplogroup. The most common was I-M284 (4 individuals), followed by I-Y3695 and I-S2660 (2 each). Other lineages included I-FGC14261, R-S552, R-L21, R-S461, and I-AMM079.1 (1 each). Mitochondrial DNA was also diverse: K1a-T195C! appeared 4 times, T2b and K1b1a1 twice each, and H4a1a1, H1b, and H27-T16093C once each. These results hint at a population with mainly I-type paternal lines before the shift.
For ancestry enthusiasts, this study confirms that southwestern England experienced a major genetic turnover in the late Neolithic/early Bronze Age. If you have deep British roots, your ancient connections may differ depending on whether your ancestors lived before or after this event.
