Ancient DNA shows Punic people were genetically diverse, with little Levantine ancestry.
This study analyzed genomes from 210 ancient individuals, mostly from Phoenician and Punic sites across the Mediterranean. Despite strong cultural ties to the Levant, people living in Punic settlements between the 6th and 2nd centuries BCE had almost no genetic contribution from the Levantine Phoenician homeland. Instead, their ancestry mainly resembled populations from Sicily and the Aegean, with a smaller North African component linked to Carthage's influence. This pattern of high genetic diversity was consistent across different Punic sites.
The study generated genome-wide data from 210 individuals, including 196 from 14 Phoenician/Punic sites in the Levant, North Africa, Iberia, Sicily, Sardinia, and Ibiza. Y-chromosome haplogroups include G-Z1903 (5), E-CTS567 (3), and T-Y37311 (2), while mitochondrial haplogroups include H1 (8), T2b (5), and HV0-a (4). These lineages reflect a mix of Mediterranean populations, supporting the diverse genetic makeup of Punic people.
For ancestry enthusiasts, this shows that cultural identity and genetic ancestry can diverge. Punic people were genetically diverse, with roots mainly in the central Mediterranean and Aegean, not the Levant. This highlights how migration and local admixture shaped ancient populations.
